TIRUVANNAMALAI: The controversial video clippings showing Swami Nithyananda in the company of a Tamil film actress were part of an “international conspiracy” aimed at tarnishing the image of “an up and coming young saint” from India, said the godman’s maternal uncle.

“Some people, who are envious of Nithyananda’s growing popularity at the global level as he is attracting lakhs of devotees, had done what some did to Osho Rajneesh in the past,” the man, who should be in his 50s, told Express.

In his growing up years, Nityananda, then called Rajasekaran, did not move with girls and had just two friends and they too are now into spiritual pursuits, said the uncle, who is taking care of the family business dealing in paddy and jaggery.

In those days, the outlook of the small clique of friends was different from that of others and it is doubtful if Nityananda would have even gone for a movie except for watching devotional films, the uncle, who did not reveal his name, said.

Rajasekaran, who was born in 1978 at Tiruvannmalai, and brought up in a house at Tiruvoodal Street close to Arunachaleswarar Temple, showed exemplary interest in spirituality, the uncle said.

Rajasekaran completed his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at a polytechnic at Gudiyatham in Vellore district and was working for a company in Chennai.

It was during those years in Chennai that Rajasekaran started frequenting Ramakrishna Mutt.

Then one day he disclosed his plans to become a sanniyasi to his family, said the maternal uncle.

“We tried our best to persuade him to lead a normal life, but Rajasekaran was in no mood to listen as he was totally focused on spirituality,” he added.

Now, even close relatives had no access to Nityananda, the uncle said, and added that they had to approach his secretary, who in turn would pass on the message to the godman.

The uncle had met Swami Nityananda when he had come down to Adi Annamalai village near Tiruvannamalai during his 33rd birthday, which fell on January 8.
